At the turning of a new lunar cycle, Templong Anituhan marks a significant spiritual transition. After offering gratitude and a formal farewell to Diwatang Makaako, who served as the guiding presence during the previous moon cycle, a new chapter begins. At approximately 6:00 PM, during the observance of the New Moon, Bathala of the Katagalugan was acknowledged as the spiritual guardian, guide, and honored patron of Templong Anituhan from this day until the next New Moon on September 11, 2026.

This moment is not an isolated event but part of a long and meaningful journey of rediscovering and honoring the ancient spiritual heritage of the Filipino people.

A Journey Begun in 2022

The commitment to study and recognize the Great Indigenous Divine Powers of the Philippines formally began on July 26, 2022. The intention was to deepen understanding of the deities, spirits, and sacred beings revered by the diverse peoples of the archipelago long before the arrival of foreign religions and influences.

Like many spiritual journeys, however, life presented numerous responsibilities and challenges. Ministry work, educational programs, community service, and the growth of various initiatives required attention. As a result, the systematic study of the Indigenous Divine Powers was temporarily set aside.

Yet a sacred calling, once heard, is never entirely forgotten.

The Renewal of a Sacred Vow

On May 10, 2025, coinciding with the 47th birthday of Rev. Rolando Gomez Comon, a profound spiritual commitment was renewed. On that day, a vow was reaffirmed: to continue the study, recognition, and honoring of the Indigenous Divine Powers acknowledged by the various cultures and peoples of the Philippines.

This renewal represented more than a return to previous studies. It symbolized a conscious act of remembrance, healing, and reconnection with the spiritual roots of the Filipino people.

From that moment onward, Templong Anituhan embraced a renewed discipline. Each New Moon would become an opportunity to focus upon a particular Diwata, divine being, or sacred power associated with the Indigenous traditions of the archipelago. Rather than merely studying these sacred figures as subjects of history or mythology, the intention would be to approach them with reverence, reflection, and spiritual engagement.

In this way, the lunar cycle itself became a living calendar of devotion and learning.

The Significance of Bathala

For the current moon cycle, the focus turns toward Bathala, one of the most revered divine figures in Tagalog spirituality.

Traditionally recognized as the supreme divine authority among the Tagalog peoples, Bathala occupies a place of honor within the spiritual worldview of the Katagalugan. Bathala is often understood as a creator, sustainer, and source of cosmic order, standing above the many Diwata who participate in the unfolding of the universe and the affairs of humanity.

Within the contemporary spiritual framework of Templong Anituhan, Bathala is acknowledged as a mighty and noble presence whose wisdom transcends time. The honoring of Bathala during this lunar month invites practitioners to contemplate themes of creation, responsibility, balance, leadership, and sacred stewardship.

Bathala’s presence reminds spiritual seekers that all existence is woven together in a great web of relationships connecting humanity, nature, ancestors, spirits, and the Divine.

From now until September 11, the community is invited to reflect upon the teachings and significance associated with Bathala.

The monthly recognition of Indigenous Divine Powers serves an important purpose within Templong Anituhan. It is an act of cultural remembrance and spiritual continuity.

For generations, many aspects of the Indigenous spiritual traditions of the Philippines were overlooked, forgotten, or misunderstood. By dedicating each New Moon cycle to learning about and honoring a specific Divine Power, Templong Anituhan participates in the ongoing preservation of ancestral wisdom.

This practice seeks to cultivate respect rather than appropriation, understanding rather than assumption, and devotion grounded in study, reflection, and experience.
