This page is dedicated to the Studies on the Filipino Indigenous Deities or what we call as the Diwata. The Diwatahan Studies originaly started on July 30, 2022 at Landas Ng Lahi and have lose track as we become busy on the actual physical world ministry. As of this time, we are entrusted to keep 63 names of the Diwata that is enshrined in our Temple. These names come from different provinces in the Philippines that are once honored by the Indigenous People in the Archipelago.
The Prayer to the Council of the Deities is a liturgical tapestry weaving together the ancestral voices, cosmologies, and sacred geographies of the Philippine archipelago. To understand this prayer is to understand that pre-colonial Filipino spirituality was not a singular, uniform religion, but a diverse ecosystem of belief systems deeply tethered to the terrain.
This guide serves as a bridge into the specific regional realms invoked throughout the liturgy, detailing their distinct geographies, spiritual structures, and the profound benefits of practicing this unified invocation.
1. The Regional Realms & Cosmological Structures
The Cordilleras (The Mountain Skyworld)
- Geography: The rugged, landlocked Central Cordillera mountain range of Northern Luzon, characterized by soaring peaks, deep pine-forested ravines, and ancient hand-carved stone rice terraces.
- Spiritual Structure: Communities like the Ifugao, Bontoc, Kankanaey, Ibaloy, Itneg, and Isneg visualize a highly sophisticated, vertically tiered universe. Divinity descends from the Skyworld (Kabunian or Angsan) down to the earthly realm through epic heroes and messengers (Lumawig or Sasailo). The spiritual system is practical, community-oriented, and deeply bound to agricultural seasons and ancestral legal councils (Ator).
Northern & Central Luzon Lowlands (The Valleys and Plains)
- Geography: The fertile river basins of the Cagayan Valley, the sweeping agrarian floodplains of Central Luzon, and the rugged Sierra Madre mountain borders.
- Spiritual Structure: Home to the Ibanag, Gaddang, Ilocano, Pangasinan, Sambal, and Kapampangan peoples. These realms feature powerful cosmic architects (Namaratu, Namarsua) and elemental rulers who control the cyclical rhythm of life—sun, moon, net-woven stars, and volcanic fire. Spiritual interaction historically relied on specialized, revered societal mediums (Katulunan, Manag-anito, or Asog) who bridged the gap between human settlements and the immense forces of nature.
The Tagalog & Bicolano Kingdoms (The Volcanic Paradises)
- Geography: The volcanic landscapes, sweeping lakes, and maritime coastal networks of Southern Luzon and the Bicol Peninsula.
- Spiritual Structure: These realms present highly stratified, advanced pre-colonial societies organized around sophisticated maritime city-states (barangays). The Tagalog and Bicolano cosmologies focus on an ultimate supreme designer (Bathala Maykapal or Gugurang) who reigns from celestial heavens of absolute light and purity (Kaluwalhatian). Their spiritual architecture stands as an eternal fortress of good and order, locked in a perpetual elemental balance against wandering forces of chaos, epidemics, and darkness.
Mindoro (The Mountain-Sustained Domains)
- Geography: The isolated, densely forested, and rugged mountainous interiors of Mindoro Island, spanning from the northern peaks down to the southern river basins.
- Spiritual Structure: Inhabited by the diverse ethnolinguistic sub-tribes of the Mangyan peoples (Iraya, Alangan, Buhid, Tadyawan, Batangan, Hanunó’o, Gubatnon, and Ratagnon). Mindoro cosmology views the earth as a living, fragile structure carried physically upon the shoulders of creators (Ambuwaw) or animated through a divine gaze (Mahal na Makaako, Ahulutok). The hierarchy balances supreme owner-deities (Afo Daga) with primordial first ancestors (Manggat and Sayum-ay) to fiercely shield human clearings from malicious forest ghouls (Labang or Tampalasen).
Palawan & The Northern Islands (The Island Channels)
- Geography: The pristine island corridors, limestone cliffs, deep rainforests, and treacherous marine channels stretching across Palawan, Cuyo, and Agutaya.
- Spiritual Structure: This realm belongs to the ancient hunter-gatherer and maritime groups like the Batak, Tagbanwa, Pala’wan, Cuyunon, and Agutaynon. Their spiritual world is multi-layered, consisting of horizontal and vertical cosmic planes. It balances primordial creators who once walked among humans (Maguimba) and stern enforcers of custom law (Magindusa) with the physical elemental guardians of the forests (Diwata ang Kagueban) and the deep tides (Neguno).
2. The Spiritual & Psychological Benefits of the Prayer
When a person recites this unified prayer, they are not merely speaking words—they are engaging in an act of deep ancestral reclamation and cosmic alignment. The benefits of practicing this liturgy include:
- Restoration of Cosmic Balance: Philippine animism operates on the core principle of reciprocity and natural harmony. By invoking the traditional keepers of the earth, forests, and waters, the practitioner invites a state of energetic equilibrium, grounding themselves safely within their physical environment.
- Ancestral and Cultural Grounding: The prayer acts as a profound reclamation of heritage, breaking free from centuries of colonial religious frameworks. It connects the speaker directly to the indigenous worldview of the archipelago, building deep psychological resilience through a rooted cultural identity.
- Protection and Warding: Historically, these names were invoked by shamans (Babaylan, Mumbaki, Catalonan) as a powerful defensive shield. Reciting this prayer serves as a spiritual fortress—cleansing the immediate surroundings of negative energies, driving away the “wandering sickness” (Labang/Busaw), and reinforcing personal boundaries.
- Cultivation of Respect and Eco-Consciousness: Because every stanza recognizes a specific geographical marker—a peak, a river, a terrace, or an ocean canal—the prayer fosters a sacred, protective relationship with the ecosystem. It transforms the practitioner’s view of the planet from an inanimate resource into a living, conscious web of divinity.
- Linguistic and Spiritual Sovereignty: By removing Westernized liturgical constraints (“Glory and Honor”) and restoring native conceptual phrasing (Langi, Davvun, Sasailo, Tabad), the prayer allows the speaker to exercise true spiritual sovereignty, speaking to the universe using the authentic, unfiltered templates of the ancestors.
