Diwatang Makaako and the Healing of Our Community

A Reflection on Prayer, Responsibility, and Collective Action

Yesterday, July 16, 2026, we were blessed by the visit of Lera Padua to Templong Anituhan for a review session on Pagsasala (Banana Leaf Scanning) and Bentusa (Fire Cupping Therapy). The formal review was conducted from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM, yet the learning did not end there.

Lera remained with us until 10:00 PM. We shared dinner together, exchanged stories, reflected on our life journeys, and discussed the realities of the society in which we live. As often happens during sincere conversations among healers, our discussion moved beyond techniques and practices. It became a conversation about the deeper wounds affecting our communities.

We spoke about children and young people who are increasingly exposed to difficult circumstances. We reflected upon reports and experiences involving vulnerable youth who struggle with poverty, neglect, exploitation, involvement in theft, violence, and other harmful behaviors. We discussed how many of these situations seem connected to family instability, economic hardship, lack of guidance, and the breakdown of supportive relationships within communities.

As we listened to one another, we felt both sadness and concern.

As Hilot Binabaylan practitioners, we are trained to observe imbalances within the physical body, emotions, mind, and spirit. Yet when confronted with the suffering of an entire community, we recognize how limited our individual ability can sometimes feel.

Many questions arose within our hearts:

What can we do?

How do we respond to the pain experienced by our youth?

What role do Hilot Binabaylan practitioners play in healing society?

What would Diwatang Makaako say in response to our prayers?

Listening to the Voice of Diwatang Makaako

Within the spiritual understanding of Templong Anituhan, Diwatang Makaako calls humanity toward awareness, wisdom, responsibility, and remembrance.

If we listen carefully, perhaps the response of Diwatang Makaako would not be a promise of instant solutions. Rather, it may come as a gentle reminder:

“You are not called to carry the entire burden of the world upon your shoulders.

You are called to become a source of healing where you stand.

Do not measure your value by how many problems you solve.

Measure it by how much compassion you bring into the lives of others.

Every act of kindness, every listening ear, every child encouraged, every family strengthened, and every prayer sincerely offered becomes part of the medicine needed by the world.”

Diwatang Makaako reminds us that healing begins with awareness.

Before a wound can be treated, it must first be recognized.

Before a community can be transformed, it must first be willing to see the suffering that exists within it.

The Role of Templong Anituhan in Community Healing

Templong Anituhan may not possess vast wealth or political authority, but it possesses something equally important: a community of people committed to healing, culture, spirituality, and service.

There are many ways we can participate in the healing of society.

Creating Safe and Sacred Spaces

Many young people are searching for belonging.

Templong Anituhan can become a place where youth feel welcomed, respected, and valued.

Through cultural gatherings, indigenous spirituality classes, storytelling circles, community meals, environmental activities, and wellness programs, we can create spaces where young people experience acceptance and guidance.

Strengthening Families

Children often reflect the conditions of the families and communities surrounding them.

When families experience conflict, poverty, trauma, or isolation, children frequently carry the burden of those struggles.

Offering family-centered spiritual support, counseling conversations, mutual aid, and community prayer can help strengthen the foundations from which healthy communities are built.

Preserving and Teaching Indigenous Wisdom

Our ancestral traditions contain teachings about responsibility, respect, reciprocity, and community.

By sharing indigenous knowledge, values, healing practices, folklore, and cultural identity, we help younger generations develop a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.

These teachings are not merely memories of the past. They are medicines for the present.

Building Partnerships

Community healing cannot be accomplished by one person, one family, or one organization alone.

The work of healing becomes stronger when Templong Anituhan collaborates with schools, healthcare professionals, social workers, local government units, cultural organizations, and community leaders.

The healing of society requires many hands working together.

Involving the Youth in Healing Efforts

One of the greatest misconceptions about young people is the belief that they are only recipients of guidance.

In reality, many youth desire opportunities to contribute, serve, and make a difference.

Instead of asking, “How do we fix the youth?” perhaps we should ask, “How do we walk beside them?”

Invite Them Into Service

Young people discover purpose when they become active contributors to their communities.

They may participate in:

  • Community clean-up projects
  • Tree planting activities
  • Community gardens
  • Feeding programs
  • Elder assistance initiatives
  • Cultural preservation projects
  • Environmental stewardship activities

When youth become helpers rather than observers, they begin to recognize their value within society.

Teach Through Experience

True learning often happens through participation.

Youth can be invited to:

  • Observe Hilot sessions
  • Learn about medicinal plants
  • Participate in ritual preparations
  • Explore local history and folklore
  • Practice indigenous arts and crafts
  • Assist during community events

Knowledge becomes meaningful when it is experienced.

Establish a Youth Circle

Templong Anituhan may consider creating a Youth Circle dedicated to:

  • Leadership development
  • Story-sharing gatherings
  • Cultural education
  • Mental wellness discussions
  • Indigenous spirituality
  • Community service projects

Young people need mentors, but they also need supportive peer communities.

Give Them a Voice

Many young people carry concerns that adults never hear.

Creating opportunities for listening circles and open dialogues allows them to share:

  • Their hopes
  • Their fears
  • Their challenges
  • Their dreams for the future

When young people feel heard, they become more invested in their community.

Honor Positive Examples

Stories have the power to inspire.

By recognizing young volunteers, responsible students, youth leaders, cultural advocates, and emerging healers, we help create examples others may follow.

Indigenous Values That Can Guide Our Actions

As Hilot Binabaylan practitioners, our response to social challenges can be guided by values deeply rooted within our ancestral traditions.

Kapwa

The Sacred Recognition of Shared Humanity

Kapwa teaches that another person’s suffering is not separate from our own. The struggles of vulnerable youth become a concern of the entire community.

Malasakit

Compassion in Action

True compassion moves beyond sympathy. It inspires service, generosity, and a willingness to help.

Bayanihan

Collective Responsibility

Our ancestors survived and thrived through cooperation. The healing of society requires communities working together.

Paggalang

Respect for Human Dignity

Every person possesses inherent worth. Even those who have made mistakes deserve opportunities for restoration and healing.

Pagkakaisa

Unity Amid Diversity

Communities become stronger when people choose cooperation rather than division.

Reciprocity with Nature

Indigenous wisdom teaches that humans are part of nature rather than separate from it. Activities that reconnect youth with the environment also reconnect them with responsibility, identity, and wellness.

Katinuan

Wisdom and Discernment

In the teachings of Luntiang Aghama, Katinuan represents wisdom developed through knowledge, reflection, and experience.

Wise action grows from listening, understanding, and thoughtful discernment rather than judgment alone.

The Calling of the Hilot Binabaylan

The role of the Hilot Binabaylan extends beyond the treatment of physical discomfort.

A Hilot Binabaylan is a guardian of balance.

This calling involves:

  • Listening without judgment
  • Offering encouragement
  • Preserving ancestral wisdom
  • Building community relationships
  • Supporting families
  • Promoting wellness of body, mind, emotions, spirit, and society

Sometimes the greatest healing does not come from a treatment procedure.

Sometimes it comes from simply being present, listening deeply, and helping another person remember their worth.

Prayer and Action Together

As our evening conversation came to a close, we returned once more to prayer.

We acknowledged our limitations.

We recognized that each of us carries personal concerns, family challenges, and responsibilities of our own.

Yet we also recognized that prayer remains a powerful act because prayer transforms those who offer it.

Perhaps this is Diwatang Makaako’s first gift to us:

Awareness.

The awareness that suffering must not be ignored.

The awareness that healing begins with compassion.

The awareness that even small acts of service can become powerful medicines for society.

The work ahead may be larger than any one individual.

Yet healing has always begun with ordinary people choosing to care.

May we become such people.

A Prayer and Supplication to Diwatang Makaako

O Diwatang Makaako, Keeper of Awareness, Wisdom, and Compassion,

We come before You with humble hearts.

You who awaken understanding within the minds of Your people, You who reveal what must be seen, You who remind us of our duty to one another, hear our prayer.

We lift before You the children and youth of our communities.

Protect those who suffer from neglect. Guide those who feel lost and forgotten. Strengthen those who struggle against hardship and despair.

May they find safety where there is danger, hope where there is discouragement, guidance where there is confusion, and love where there is loneliness.

Bless the families who labor under heavy burdens.

Bring healing where relationships have been broken. Bring understanding where there is conflict. Bring patience where there is frustration. Bring unity where there is division.

Teach us not to look away from the suffering of our neighbors.

Grant us eyes that see with compassion, ears that listen with patience, hearts that respond with kindness, and hands willing to serve.

May Templong Anituhan become a sanctuary of healing, a refuge for the weary, a school of wisdom for the young, and a beacon of hope for the community.

Guide all Hilot Binabaylan practitioners to become instruments of balance, messengers of peace, guardians of culture, and servants of the common good.

Where wounds are hidden, bring awareness.

Where hearts are hardened, bring compassion.

Where communities are broken, bring cooperation.

Where despair exists, plant seeds of hope.

And where healing is needed, may we have the courage to begin.

Diwatang Makaako, receive our prayers and supplications.

Illuminate our path, strengthen our resolve, and teach us to transform concern into service, service into healing, and healing into lasting peace.

Makaako, gabayan Mo kami.

Mayari Na! PagAsatin! 🌿🙏🏻✨
