Have you ever lit a morning candle or oil lamp, offered a simple prayer for guidance, and suddenly felt an internal nudge to look deeper?
Recently, during a ritual to honor Makaako—the Supreme Deity and Creator in Karay-a (Kinaray-a) cosmology—a profound realization emerged. While contemplating Makaako as the Tag-iya kang Sansinukob (The Owner of the Universe), a striking parallel became clear: The seven vertical layers of the Karay-a universe are not just external maps of the heavens—they are a blueprint for our own personal existence.
In indigenous Panay spirituality, a human being is never seen as an isolated entity. We are the microcosm reflecting the macrocosm. If Makaako sits at the absolute peak of a seven-layered cosmic structure, holding reality in perfect balance, then we too possess seven distinct layers of self that must be understood, aligned, and nurtured.
As we step into a new moon cycle—a sacred time for reflecting on what has been and deciding what we want to manifest—let us explore how the architecture of the cosmos mirrors the architecture of our souls.
The 7 Layers of Personal Existence
1. The Physical Layer (Your Vessel)
- Cosmic Layer: Saranuban (The deep, dense foundation of the universe)
- The Personal Mirror: This is your physical body, your home, and the tangible ground you walk on. It represents everything that already physically exists in your life. When you clean your room, care for your health, or tend to a physical altar, you are stabilizing your personal Saranuban.
2. The Fluid Layer (Your Adaptation)
- Cosmic Layer: Tubignon (The vast water realm)
- The Personal Mirror: This layer governs your emotions, your intuition, and your capacity to adapt. Just as the oceans shift with the tides of the moon, this personal layer dictates how you flow with change, process feelings, and navigate the emotional currents of daily life.
3. The Subterranean Layer (Your Roots and Shadow)
- Cosmic Layer: Idalmunon (The underground realm beneath the soil)
- The Personal Mirror: This is the realm of your subconscious mind. It holds your buried memories, past conditioning, instinctual drives, and hidden fears. To understand this layer is to look honestly at the unseen roots that feed your current behavior and beliefs.
4. The Interactive Layer (Your Waking Reality)
- Cosmic Layer: Lupan-on (The surface of the earth)
- The Personal Mirror: This is your conscious, everyday life. It is the space where you actively step out into the world, interact with nature, build relationships, and execute your daily work. It is the realm of immediate action and present-moment connection.
5. The Energetic Layer (Your Dungan)
- Cosmic Layer: Kahanginan (The atmosphere and invisible air currents)
- The Personal Mirror: In Visayan culture, this is the layer of your Dungan—your spiritual life force, willpower, and psychic vitality. Your Dungan can expand, grow strong, or become vulnerable to negative external forces. Spiritual insights, sudden intuitive prompts, and energetic shifts happen right here in your personal atmosphere.
6. The Ancestral Layer (Your Lineage and Habilin)
- Cosmic Layer: Ibabawnon (The ancestral skyworld where the departed reside)
- The Personal Mirror: This is your connection to your genetic and spiritual lineage. It encompasses your habilin—the sacred inheritances, cultural responsibilities, and generational wisdom passed down to you. You activate this layer whenever you honor those who came before you and protect their preserved traditions.
7. The Sovereign Layer (Your Divine Spark)
- Cosmic Layer: The Uppermost Peak (The exclusive dwelling of Makaako)
- The Personal Mirror: This is your Higher Self, your pure consciousness, and the unshakeable divine spark within you that links directly to the Source of existence (1:32). This supreme layer does not micromanage your small daily anxieties; it is the silent, all-seeing anchor that holds your entire seven-layer being together in cosmic alignment.
A Reflection for the New Moon
The supreme creator Makaako is historically recognized as a Deus Otiosus—a distant first cause. He set the universe into motion and allowed life-force energy to filter down organically through the lower layers.
As you contemplate this new lunar cycle, you do not need to force immediate answers about your future. Let your clarity grow gradually, just like the crescent moon.
Sit quietly with your thoughts, look at the layers of your life, and ask yourself: In which of these seven personal realms am I being called to birth a new existence?
- Do you need to fortify your Physical vessel (Layer 1)?
- Do you need to let your Emotions flow more freely (Layer 2)?
- Are you being called to step into your authentic spiritual power and strengthen your Dungan (Layer 5)?
By aligning our personal layers with the divine order of the universe, we honor the ultimate source of existence and bring balance to our shared world.
