Embracing the Transition: From Makidepat’s Cycle to the New Moon and Winter Solstice

As the moon prepares to renew its cycle in three nights, I find myself reflecting on the profound presence of Diwatang Makidepat in our temple since November 21. Their guidance has been a source of strength and wisdom, shaping not only our spiritual journey but also the direction of our ministry.

Makidepat is a unique Diwata—neither exclusively male nor female, but a harmonious embodiment of both masculine and feminine divine energies. Traditionally revered by the Dumagat Tribe of Sierra Madre, Makidepat bridges the land and the sea, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all realms. This symbolism resonates deeply as we navigate the challenges and blessings they have placed before us.

One such challenge is the healing of Mang Wilfredo, who is currently staying in our temple with his family. Through this experience, Makidepat has opened a doorway for transformation: the vision of our temple evolving into a traditional hilot hospital, a sanctuary for those who cannot afford modern healthcare. This is not merely a dream—it is a calling to serve, to heal, and to create sustainable opportunities for families like Mang Wilfredo’s.

The practice of Hilot has become more than a healing art; it is a spiritual path that connects us to the legions of Diwata across the Philippines. This realization fills me with pride. We, the Filipino people, have our own divine heritage—our own gods who liberate and empower us. We do not need foreign doctrines that enslave; instead, we honor a God who creates and calls us to co-create, caring for what has already been brought into existence. The Diwata remind us of this cosmic order, guiding and guarding our temple as we walk the path of the Binabaylan.

As we approach the new moon on December 20 at 9:44 AM, followed by the Winter Solstice on December 21, the universe invites us to pause and gather strength. The longest night begins at 5:33 PM, signaling a time for rest and renewal. Daylight will shorten to approximately 11 hours and 14 minutes, reminding us to use our energy wisely and embrace the rhythm of nature.

In this sacred transition, I offer a prayer to Diwatang Makidepat and the Councils of the Diwata:
May the new guardian sent to our temple bless us with healing power for Mang Wilfredo and his family. May they restore his body, mind, and spirit, and guide us to know ourselves more deeply. Teach us adaptability, reveal our strengths and weaknesses, and prepare us to be worthy of the title Binabaylan.

Special Prayer to Diwatang Makidepat (English Translation)

O Makidepat, Diwata of the Waters, Bridge of Land and Sea, Keeper of Balance,
We thank you for your presence in our temple throughout this past cycle.
Through your guidance, we have learned to embrace challenges as blessings and transformation as grace.

You who carry the strength of the masculine and the gentleness of the feminine,
Teach us to become vessels of unity and healing.

As your reign draws to a close, grant your final blessing of peace and health to Mang Wilfredo and his family.
Strengthen our spirit to continue serving, and show us the path toward our dream of a sanctuary of hilot and healing herbs.

Makidepat, watch over us until you return to our midst once again.
In the name of Bathala and the Diwata, we give thanks.

So Mote It Be.

Ritual Prayer for the New Moon and Winter Solstice (English Translation)

Carving the New Cycle

In the name of Mayari and the Diwata, we pray.
As the moon wanes and a new cycle begins, we give thanks to Makidepat, the bridge of land and sea, for their guidance and blessings.

With the birth of the new moon and the longest night of the year, we ask for strength and rest.

O Diwata of Nature, guard our temple.
Heal Mang Wilfredo and his family—body, mind, and soul.

Teach us wisdom, resilience, and harmony with life’s challenges.
Make us worthy to be Binabaylan, keepers of the cosmic order.

In the light of the new moon and the darkness of the longest night, let us be reborn in your grace.

Bless our hands to heal, our hearts to love, and our spirits to serve.

So Mote It Be.
