Cosmological Doctrine of the Four Spiritual Ranks

The spiritual cosmology of Templong Anituhan is rooted in the sacred understanding of the universe as a living system governed by divine forces. These forces manifest through four distinct ranks of spiritual beings, each with their own domain, function, and relationship to humanity. This doctrine serves as a foundational guide for Binabaylan clergy, practitioners, and seekers of indigenous wisdom.

1. Umli – Supreme Spirit of the Upper Realms

Umli is the highest class of spiritual being, dwelling in the realm of Kaitaasan (the Upper World). As the Supreme Spirit, Umli holds itself apart from human affairs, maintaining cosmic order and divine law. Though transcendent, Umli participates in sacred rituals of revelation, helping the Baylan uncover spiritual offenses that cause imbalance or illness. Umli is not invoked casually, but accessed through disciplined ritual and spiritual attunement.

2. Diwata – Intermediaries of the Supreme

Diwata are divine beings who serve as intermediaries between Umli and humanity. They embody elemental forces such as Earth, Fire, Water, and Air, and respond to offerings, prayers, and moral alignment. Diwata can bless or curse, depending on the sincerity and spiritual conduct of the petitioner. They are central figures in healing, consecration, and seasonal rituals.

3. Engkanto – Nature Spirits

Engkanto are spirits of nature who inhabit forests, rivers, mountains, and sacred places. They are guardians of ecological balance and often interact with humans in protective or mischievous ways. Engkanto must be respected and appeased, especially when entering their domains. Rituals involving Engkanto focus on harmony with the environment and protection from spiritual disturbance.

4. Anito – Ancestral Spirit Guides

Anito are the spirits of ancestors who remain connected to the living. They offer guidance, healing, and protection, and are honored through ancestral rites, memory, and offerings. Anito serve as bridges between the past and present, helping individuals maintain spiritual continuity and cultural identity.

🌿 Conclusion

This cosmological doctrine affirms the sacred hierarchy of spiritual beings and their roles in maintaining balance between the divine, natural, and human realms. It is a living tradition that guides the rituals, ethics, and spiritual practices of the Binabaylan clergy and the faithful of Templong Anituhan.
